BA Parker School Replacement Project
Latest News:
The formal grand opening of the new BAPS facility took place, at the school, on October 21, 2011.
The time capsule was placed in the permanent location in the front entry wall. Once sealed in place, it will begin the long wait until it will be opened by a future generation of students.
The Project has been completed, other than minor deficiencies which are being followed up by the Plant Department.
Thank you to all who have been so patient and helpful throughout this project.
History:
Phase 1 included:
-
Creation of a new library for GCHS by renovating surplus classroom space in the Tuesday wing,
-
Art room relocation into a surplus classroom in the Monday wing,
-
Sewing room Relocation into part of the Technology design space,
-
Renovation of the boys and girls washrooms,
-
Installation of new windows and doors
-
Ventilation upgrades to the Monday and Tuesday wings, which in the past did not have a mechanical ventilation system,
-
Welding shop relocation into a corner of the automotive shop, which is being renovated to improve the use of space, and to repair the floor,
-
Installation of the new roadways and parking areas, and
-
Other upgrades and painting work to improve the appearance of GCHS.
Phase 2 included:
- Creation of the new BA Parker School,
- Other work took place to relocate some of the space needed by Confederation College to other areas of the building, and
- Extensive grounds work and painting was carried out to put the final touches on the site and building.
In September 2008 the Ministry of Education provided a funding approval to proceed with the replacement of BAPS, which was determined to be Prohibitive to Repair (PTR) following an inspection of the building, by the Ministry of Education. This approval included benchmark funding of $4,477,030, plus additional funding of $300,000 for full day JK/SK provision. However, the Ministry of Education stipulated that the replacement BAPS building would have to be incorporated into the under-utilized Geraldton HS immediately next door.
A Design Steering Committee was created, which included various stakeholders, staff, and community members, for the purpose of community consultations to gather ideas and input to be considered in the project. Upon completion of it's mandate, the final input from the Steering Committee was used to create a final preferred layout.
The services of the architectural firm of Evans Bertrand Hill Wheeler (formerly known as Critchley Delean Trussler Evans Bertand) were engaged to put the project drawings together and prepare the tender documents. This firm was chosen because of their history within the Superior-Greenstone District School Board, having designed and overseen the new construction of the following board schools: Marjorie Mills PS, Dorion PS, Margaret Twomey PS, Marathon HS, Manitouwadge HS. Major renovation work was also performed at many other Board schools. The quality of the finished product has consistently been very good, and costs were kept within line.
Information related to the B.A. Parker Public School Replacement Project including Drawings, Schedules, Reports to the Board of Trustees, and Minutes of the Design Steering Committee have been posted below once available. Construction completion was achieved in Sept 2011.
