SGDSB Appoints Second Student Trustee

The Superior-Greenstone District School Board (SGDSB) is pleased to announce the appointment of Stephanie Rathwell of Manitouwadge High School as its Student Trustee, effective February 1, 2019 for a two-year term.

Rathwell, a grade 11 student was acclaimed by her peers on the Student Senate following her candidacy address held in May of 2018.  She has always taken an interest in her school community being a member of Student Council throughout her high school career.  Current Student Trustee Logan Furoy has mentored Rathwell for her new position since September 2018.

In the Spring of 2018 the Ministry of Education announced the amendment of Ontario Regulation 7/07 which now grants school boards the opportunity to have more than one student trustee for up to a two-year term of office.  As a result of the amendment, the Superior-Greenstone District School Board has amended their policy to support two student trustees for a two-year term.  The board has implemented an appointment schedule that will allow for overlap of the role to provide ongoing mentorship.

Board Chair Pinky McRae congratulated Rathwell and stated that, “We are proud of our Student Trustees Stephanie and Logan as they are strong student leaders.  They represent the hope of tomorrow and they reflect our board vision of inspiring our students to succeed and make a difference.”

About her upcoming term as student trustee, Rathwell said, “I look forward to continuing my work with the Student Senate and representing their voice at the Board level.  I am honoured to have this position."

Interim Director of Education Nicole Morden Cormier commented on the appointment saying that “Stewardship is an important pillar within our strategic plan and the appointment of a second Student Trustee is a celebrated achievement of our objective to strengthen student voice through leadership opportunities.  The student voice at the Board table is highly valued by all trustees and supports strong student engagement.”
