At Superior-Greenstone District School Board, we believe that every individual is unique, with different strengths, abilities, and perspectives. We embrace and celebrate neurodiversity, recognizing that neurological differences are a natural part of the human experience. During the month of April, we dedicate our efforts to raising awareness of neurodiversity and celebrating the diverse abilities within our school community.

What is Neurodiversity?

Neurodiversity is the understanding that neurological differences, such as autism, ADHD, dyslexia, and others, are natural variations of the human brain. Rather than viewing these differences as deficits or disorders, we recognize them as unique ways of experiencing the world.

How we celebrate neurodiversity:

Throughout the year SGDSB celebrates and highlights the importance of neurodiversity, however during the month of April, we take the time for special recognition and understanding celebrates neurodiversity and promotes inclusion through various activities and initiatives:

Awareness Campaign: We raise awareness about neurodiversity and the importance of inclusion through school-wide campaigns, assemblies, and classroom discussions.

I am Challenge: Our Mental Health Team launches the "I am Challenge," inviting everyone to share ways they celebrate their uniqueness. Participants can express themselves through art, videos, poems, or any creative medium of their choice.

Autism Awareness: April is also Autism Awareness Month, and we dedicate resources to raising awareness about autism spectrum disorders. We provide information and resources to support understanding and acceptance of individuals with autism.

Promoting Diversity and Inclusion: Diversity and inclusion are supported all year at SGDSB. However, throughout the month, we emphasize the value of diversity and inclusion in our school community and take extra time to recognize and understand the importance neurodiversity. We encourage students and staff to embrace differences, show empathy, and foster a culture of acceptance during this month and beyond.
