Water Quality Review at BAPS & GCHS

Update:  May 14, 2025

MARATHON, ON – The Superior-Greenstone District School Board (SGDSB) is pleased to announce that recent water quality testing at B.A. Parker Public School and Geraldton Composite High School has been completed, and the results confirm that the drinking water is safe for consumption.

This update follows the precautionary measures implemented on April 30, 2025, when discoloured water was observed at the school. Out of an abundance of caution and in collaboration with appropriate authorities, SGDSB temporarily discontinued drinking water access while comprehensive testing was conducted. Throughout the process, potable water was made available to all students and staff, and all other water systems in the buildings remained fully operational.

The testing results have now been received and confirm that the drinking water meets all required safety standards. An isolated issue within one specific area of B.A. Parker Public School has been identified, and repair work is currently underway to fully resolve it. This issue does not impact the broader school water system or the safety of drinking water within the school.

“Ensuring the health and safety of our students, staff, and school communities is our highest priority,” said Will Goodman, Director of Education. “We are grateful to families, staff, and our community partners for their understanding and cooperation as we worked through this situation with transparency and care.”

Updated communications have been shared with families, staff, community partners, municipalities, and Indigenous communities connected to the schools.

MARATHON, Ontario – The Superior-Greenstone District School Board (SGDSB) is currently working with appropriate officials to conduct a review of the water quality at B.A. Parker Public School and Geraldton Composite High School.  This action follows the observation of water discolouration on April 30, 2025.

Out of an abundance of caution, the Board has implemented a temporary disruption to the drinking water supply at both schools.  Potable drinking water is being provided for students and staff beginning immediately.  All other water services within the schools, including those used for handwashing, dishwashing, and restrooms, remain operational and safe for use.

“Our priority is the health and safety of students and staff,” said Will Goodman, Director of Education at SGDSB.  “We are committed to keeping our school communities informed and to taking all necessary precautions while the water quality review is underway.”

The Board will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide updates as new information becomes available.  SGDSB thanks families, staff and the broader community for their patience and cooperation.
