SGDSB Welcomes New Student Trustee
The Superior-Greenstone District School Board is pleased to announce the appointment of Sophie McGrath of Manitouwadge High School as the Board's newest Student Trustee.
Sophie will begin her two-year term on August 1, 2026, filling the vacancy created as Student Trustee Miley Anthony concludes her term at the end of July and prepares to begin university studies.
As Student Trustee, Sophie will serve alongside Student Trustee Rylee McLeod from Lake Superior High School and Indigenous Student Trustee Sam Sabourin from Marathon High School. Together, they will represent student voice across the district while supporting initiatives connected to the Student Senate and Indigenous Youth Council.
An active and engaged member of her school community, Sophie has previously served as a member of Student Senate and is recognized as a strong student leader. She is looking forward to representing students from across the district at the Board level and contributing to conversations that impact education and student success.
Student Trustees attend all Board meetings and are also welcomed to participate in meetings of the Special Education Advisory Committee and Indigenous Education Advisory Committee. Their role helps ensure that student perspectives remain an important part of Board discussions and decision-making.
“At SGDSB, we believe that student voice is essential to strong leadership and meaningful learning,” said Chief Executive Officer, Will Goodman. “Sophie has already demonstrated a strong commitment to her school community and student leadership. We are excited to welcome her to the Board table and look forward to the perspectives, ideas, and energy she will bring to this important role.”
Student Trustee Miley Anthony was also recognized during the Regular Board Meeting held on Monday, May 25 in Manitouwadge. Miley was presented with a service award by CEO Will Goodman and Board Chair Pinky McCrea in recognition of her dedication, leadership, and contributions during her term as Student Trustee. The Board expressed its appreciation for her commitment to representing student voice and wished her continued success as she begins her post-secondary journey.
The Board remains committed to its mission of working together to engage students through meaningful learning and empowering them to build the skills they need to be successful today and in the future.
The appointment also comes as communities across Ontario prepare for the 2026 municipal and school board elections, which will take place this fall. The Superior-Greenstone District School Board is currently encouraging community members interested in serving as School Board Trustees to learn more about the role and register as candidates through their local municipalities.
School Board Trustees play an important role in representing community voice, supporting student achievement, and providing good governance for public education. SGDSB values strong governance and believes encouraging student voice at the Board table helps strengthen decisions that support students, families, and communities across the district.
