SGDSB Students Showcase Skilled Trades Excellence at Skills Ontario Competition
Students from Superior-Greenstone District School Board proudly represented Northern Ontario at the Skills Ontario Competition held on May 4-6, 2026, at the Toronto Congress Centre.
Sixteen students from Marathon High School and Nipigon-Red Rock District High School participated in the two-and-a-half-day provincial event, where they had the opportunity to showcase their talents and skills in a variety of skilled trades and technology competitions.
In addition to the contests, students also explored a wide range of opportunities through the Career Exploration Showcase, the Young Women's Conference, and the First Nations, Métis and Inuit (FNMI) Conference. The event provided students with valuable exposure to emerging technologies, future career pathways, and hands-on learning experiences connected to Ontario's skilled trades and technology sectors.
The competition offered students the chance to compete for medals, scholarships, and bursaries while celebrating achievement and participation in their chosen skilled trades areas. More importantly, the experience encouraged students to broaden their perspectives and consider the many rewarding opportunities available within the skilled trades and technologies.
For 35 years, Skills Ontario has been dedicated to promoting skilled trades and technologies to youth across the province and empowering the next generation workforce.
Director of Education Will Goodman expressed appreciation for the students and educators who participated in the event. “We are incredibly proud of our students and the educators who supported them throughout this experience,” said Goodman. “Opportunities such as the Skills Ontario Competition allow students to expand their global and future vision while exploring emerging technologies and skilled career pathways. Our students represented the North strongly at the competition, and we celebrate their accomplishments and dedication.”
Superior-Greenstone District School Board remains committed to providing meaningful learning opportunities that inspire students to explore pathways connected to their interests, strengths, and future aspirations.
