Director Statement Re: Tragic Death of GOPS Student

The Superior-Greenstone District School Board is deeply saddened by the tragic loss of a George O'Neill Public School student from the Nipigon community on March 17, 2026, during March Break.

On behalf of Superior-Greenstone District School Board, we are sending our heartfelt condolences and thoughts to the families directly impacted, friends, classmates, and all those impacted by this loss.  At this time, our priority is to support them and respect their privacy as they endure unimaginable grief and loss. 

The impact of this tragedy is far reaching and extends to other school communities in Superior-Greenstone District School Board.  Our thoughts are with the student's family, friends, classmates, and all those impacted by this loss. We extend our heartfelt condolences during this incredibly difficult time.

Supports are being made available for students and staff at the affected schools, including access to members of the board's Mental Health Team. We are here for them and each other as we walk a difficult road ahead. 

We grieve with the families, students and staff of George O'Neill Public School, and others across our district who have been impacted by this tragedy.
