Students Explore Skilled Trades Through Pastry Arts Workshop

Superior-Greenstone District School Board (SGDSB), in partnership with Skills Ontario and the Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP), is celebrating the success of two Pastry Arts Workshops delivered to Grade 2–3 students across the district. The event was made possible through the Superior-Greenstone OYAP Initiative in partnership with Skills Ontario's Young Women's Initiatives. A total of 162 students participated in this exciting learning experience.
What a SWEET day of learning it was with the Skilled Trades and Tech Days Cookie Workshop! Elementary students had the opportunity to roll up their sleeves, put on their chef hats, and dive into the world of Pastry Arts. Through hands-on activities, including cookie decorating, interactive games, and guided demonstrations, students explored skilled trades in a fun and engaging way. The workshops encouraged creativity, teamwork, and early career exploration, helping students imagine future pathways in skilled trades and technologies.
SGDSB extends a heartfelt thank-you to Skills Ontario's Young Women's Initiative representatives, Katie, Stefanie, Lindsay, and Emily, for leading the workshops with enthusiasm and expertise. Their passion for empowering young learners shone through as they inspired students to try something new and discover the exciting possibilities within the skilled trades.
As part of Superior-Greenstone District School Board's commitment to providing meaningful career exploration opportunities, this initiative reflects the Board's dedication to introducing students to skilled trades early and empowering them to envision diverse pathways for their future. This work directly aligns with SGDSB's Strategic Plan, highlighting Joy in Learning & Teaching and fostering Meaningful Community Connections & Partnership through collaboration with organizations such as Skills Ontario.
“We are committed to working together to engage students through meaningful learning and to empower them with the skills they need to succeed today and, in the future,” said Shawna Grouette, SGDSB's OYAP Recruiter, Co-op, Dual Credit and SHM Lead. “Providing early exposure to diverse career pathways—like those in the skilled trades—is an important part of supporting our learners.”
Superior-Greenstone District School Board sincerely appreciates the educators whose dedication made this event possible and the students whose enthusiasm and creativity brought it to life.
